Q: What is an Assisted Living Community?
A: A community that is a combination of housing, personal care services and some health care services primarily designed to serve elderly people. Assisted Living Communities promote maximum independence, dignity and choice.
Q: Who lives in Assisted Living communities?
A: Assisted Living residents can vary in age but most often are seniors who are retired. They can be completely independent, need some assistance now or in the future or may suffer from Alzheimer's disease or other memory disorders. At Kensington Green residents with memory impairments live on Southview Suites a separate residence with a program designed to preserve dignity and add quality of life.
Q: How is it determined whether an interested party is eligible to move in to a community?
A: In most communities including Kensington Green there is an application which must be completed that includes medical and financial information, a personal interview with an assessment conducted by a registered nurse and written confirmation by the applicant's physician.
Q: Are Assisted Living communities regulated?
A: Connecticut Assisted Living communities are licensed and regulated by the Connecticut Department of Public Health.
Q: What types of services are offered in Assisted Living communities?
A: Communities will vary as to what is offered. At Kensington Green included in monthly rent is apartment rent, three meals per day, weekly housekeeping, towel & sheet linen service, free scheduled transportation, daily social activities, outings, use of all community common areas, emergency call system, utilities excluding cable television and telephone and more. There are other services available including Wellness Care that is charged separately from rent.
Q: Is there an entrance fee to move in into the community?
A: Again communities vary concerning move-in fees. At Kensington Green we only charge a one-time nurse assessment fee and one month's security fee on the apartment.
Q: How much does it cost to live in an Assisted Living community?
A: Costs vary depending on the size of the apartment, location, the services needed, etc. The best way to determine the cost is to visit a community like Kensington Green where the staff would be happy accompany you on a tour of the community and address all your questions.
Q: Can I bring my furniture and belongings with me if I move in?
A: Yes, although many residents downsize their belongings by giving them to family, selling some or donating some items to charities.
